Principal Functions

The Fitness & Recreation Attendant works as an attendant in the gymnasium, outdoor hard court, athletic field, and supply and track equipment for users as necessary.  Keep score and/or referee during recreational sports league games. Ensure the safe use of the facilities by assisting patrons as needed in the fitness department with the equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Maintain all public Fitness & Recreation areas in a neat and clean fashion.

  2. Generate legible and accurate accident and incident reports as required.

  3. Assist and direct guests in moving about the facility to avoid crowded conditions and maximize service efficiency.

  4. Follow and ensure adherence to RJKCCC and The Salvation Army Policies and Procedures.

  5. Work in a cooperative manner with the other team members of the Fitness and Recreation department.

  6. Attend all scheduled staff meetings.

  7. Maintain cleanliness of Fitness & Recreation areas by cleaning equipment and training areas, dusting, vacuuming and sweeping.

  8. Promote member self-cleaning of equipment by ensuring hand wipe dispensers are full and functional.

  9. Enforce all Fitness and Recreation policies and procedures pertaining to the fitness floor, exercise room and facilities on a consistent basis.

  10. Circulate regularly throughout the fitness and recreation area including the circuit and free weight areas, the cardio loft, the group exercise rooms, the gymnasium, outdoor hard court and athletic field to ensure proper usage by patrons.

  11. Report all fitness equipment and gymnasium/field area problems to the Fitness and Recreation Coordinator and/or Fitness and Wellness Manager.  Notify members and staff when equipment is out of working order or in need of repair.

  12. Handle disputes with members in a professional manner.

  13. Report all harmful problems with facilities to the Fitness and Wellness Coordinator and/or Fitness and Wellness Manager.

  14. Report all injuries in a timely manner and according to procedure.

  15. Represent RJKCCC and The Salvation Army’s spiritual and social mission.

  16. Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the position.


Education Requirements

High School Diploma or GED required.

Two years of college preferred in a field related to leisure studies, parks and recreation or physical education preferred.

Other Qualifications

  • Must have gym and exercise equipment knowledge.  Must be able to express his or her knowledge on the form and function of each piece of equipment and can demonstrate its proper use.

  • Must have the ability to confidently speak and instruct groups of people consisting of individuals with varying age, experience, competency and cultural backgrounds.

  • Computer skills with Microsoft Office and similar applications are preferred.

  • Must be able to read, write and communicate in English.

  • Must have ability to work and relate well with people.

  • Must have or be able to obtain CPR/First Aid certification within first 30 days of employment.

  • Must be able to lift and carry 40lbs.

  • Must be in good physical and mental health, capable of meeting the demands of the gymnasium and athletic field programs.

  • Maintain a professional attitude and approach to problem solving.
