General Summary:

The Recreation Specialist provides recreational and education-based activities using a variety of techniques that aim to improve and maintain the mental and emotional well-being of the clients.


  • Plans and supervises the recreational activities and life skills programs in accordance with the needs, interests, and capacities of the Kingsboro MICA shelter population.

  • Encourages clients to acquire new skills and participate in health promoting leisure activities such as games, arts and crafts and sports activities.

  • Teaches and leads daily recreational activities and life skills groups on topics such as stress management and relapse prevention, art groups and organize movie nights and game day activities. Supervises interns and volunteers.

  • Orders supplies and equipment for recreational activities; issues and collects program equipment from residents; regularly inspects recreational area and equipment for safety.

  • Maintains an accurate inventory of supplies.

  • Expand and supervise the program’s token economy system.

  • Organizes and promotes events for special occasions such as holiday programs; arranges field trips and activities outside of facility as approved by the Director of Social Services or designee.

  • Attends community meetings as assigned; participates in Social Services meetings to coordinate activities and goals and participates as required; attends in-service programs and meetings for staff.

  • Documents all relevant activities in CARES and provides accurate monthly statistical reports.

  • Completes incident reports as needed.

  • Works with private and public organizations to further the goals of the recreation program.

  • The essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to the duties listed in the job description.



  • Associate Degree from an accredited college including or supplemented by 24 credits in recreation, physical education, dance, applied arts group work, and other related disciplines or two years relevant experience.

  • Must possess a valid NYS driver’s license.
