Oversee all aspects for the program administration, operations and compliance with standards and regulations for the UPK program. The Teacher-Director will provide leadership to ensure high quality early childhood curriculum and developmentally focused and evidence based services for UPK students. The Teacher Director should keep abreast of developments in the child development field.
- The Teacher-Director teacher is responsible for establishing a developmentally oriented environment conducive to the growth of young children.
- The Teacher should demonstrate knowledge and an understanding of the individual needs of young children. Teacher-child interactions should be responsive, intentional and developmentally appropriate so children are provided with supportive, organized and instructionally meaningful interactions that support their development (i.e. social-emotional, physical, cognitive and language development)
- Assess the educational and developmental needs of each child with input from their families. Plan and implement a comprehensive curriculum that not only aligns with the early learning standards, goals, assessments, and instructional strategies but also addresses the educational, the social, the developmental and health needs of the group, as well as the individual child.
- Keep equipment and material accessible and in good condition to encourage maximum constructive use by the children. Removing or reporting any damaged or hazardous equipment to the director or other designated person so that necessary action may be taken.
- Plan and supervise an appropriate arrangement of his/her own classroom furniture designed to promote optimal program functioning. Share in the overall planning for the best use of shared space in relation to the total center program.
- Plan the use of community resources to enrich the educational content of the children’s program.
- The Teacher-Director provides supervision to all staff. The Teacher-Director will take responsibility to promote the professional growth of classroom associates.
- Is expected to approach issues and problems professionally. In addition, they should maintain good working relationships and objective attitudes with other staff members., work cooperatively with colleagues
- Organize and attend staff meetings, professional conferences, and engage in ongoing staff development. The Teacher-Director will meet weekly with the teachers for supervision meetings.
- Share with classroom associates their mutual knowledge and understanding of TSA and the community which their center serves.
- Assist with the annual evaluation of the job performance of the classroom associates and of the educational program of the center.
- Writing and sharing records with appropriate staff members as required and necessary for the effective administration of the center, the development of the program, or work with the individual child.
- Coordinating the work schedules of individual staff with planned group activities.
- Ensure that staff records behavior and progress of each child and utilizing these with staff for program planning and referrals, as needed.
- Help staff to understand the framework of the community in which they work, and the UPK center’s role in The Salvation Army.
